Is there no social gospel in the NT?

Here is the reply I got from Bob Burney (see previous post). Maybe I didn't write everything that I should have written to him.

Jeremy,

Thank you for writing.

My beef with Wallis is his refusal to deal with the nature of sin. Jesus came into the world to "save sinners". Wallis may also believe that - but he never says it. His Gospel is a social gospel that is simply not found in the NT. He implies that if we can alleviate poverty - we will alleviate all of society's problems. That will never happen until sin is dealt with. He has it backwards.

Again, thanks for writing.

Jesus came to save sinner, announce the kingdom and give us glimpses into what the kingdom (a place where God, not sin, reigns) can look like. It is difficult to reverse years of modern evangelical thought that tells us we must find the one reason Christ came. It is the same reason that many Christians focus more on sin magement than living out the kingdom. Christ's was a manifold purpose, should we expect anything else from the creator of the universe.
